Exclusive: Tiffiny discusses Black Warrior, the Roxy Ran series, Writing, Anti-Bullying and more

Tiffiny spoke to us this week to promote Black Warrior, check out our awesome 4th interview with her below:

Can you tell us a bit about Black Warrior?

Gees… Black Warrior has more magic, adventure, action than ever and finally a win for the misfit Gate Twos! Roxy has to recruit her enemies, including Hero, to work together to defeat a monster threatening her town of Lanterwood. I wanted everything to go wrong for Roxy Ran so she could be challenged, learn and grow – not only as a ninja but as a young woman too.

Who is the target audience?

Girls and boys aged 8 and up.

What sort of messages did you try to convey?

The Roxy Ran series has overarching themes of building confidence, resilience and self-esteem. There’s a strong anti-bullying message encouraging kids to stand up for themselves and to use their voice. But also in the character of Hero, I’m trying to encourage people not to give up on the bullies either, as they lack just as much confidence as their victims. Hero is reformed by the end of the series. I really hope that those who suffer from bullying find a friend and a mentor in Roxy Ran. Anchoring all the characters is the message to be yourself, be true to you, be authentic and live your talents, passions and dreams.

Who or what inspired the Roxy Ran series?

Growing up in the world of martial arts in my family Taekwondo schools I was inspired by the philosophies of martial arts, the weaponry, the fight choreography and techniques. But most of all I was inspired by my Taekwondo students, those who had been bullied. I wanted to write something that gave them comfort and the tools to be strong and resilient.

How long did it take to write the book?

To complete the entire Roxy Ran series; planning, story mapping, character development, writing and editing took four years. Four years! It usually takes me 3-5 months to complete a first draft, that is, if I’m writing full-time. Usually I am also working in health and fitness, conducting writing workshops, running anti bullying programs in schools, teaching Taekwondo and working in the media. I also worked a lot in television during those four years so it slowed the process down. Now that I’m writing pretty much full-time, I aim to write two books a year.

How is the book different to White Ninja and Red Samurai?

Roxy’s father is on the scene. Her family is torn apart. She can’t rely on anyone as all her friends are cursed and the town is in chaos. There are kidnappings, betrayals, revenge and through all this is a girl navigating all the different relationships a young girl develops in a modern family; a loving and artistic step-father, secretive mother, teenage older sister, boyfriend, best-friend, bully and her biological dad. This book shows us the power of family, friendship and loyalty.

How do you feel about the feedback you’ve received?

I love hearing from my readers! Feedback and reviews have been wonderfully positive and rewarding. I expected the series to be embraced by girls but I’m thrilled to hear so many boys have devoured the series as well.  Boys love Jackson Axe – and why wouldn’t you!

Must Read: Lonely Years

An extract from Bully For Them: Outstanding Australians on Hard Lessons Learned at School is now available in The Sydney Morning Herald. Tiff, along with two other successful Australians detail how they learned to overcome the bullies and feelings of worthlessness that dogged their school days. This is a must read, it seems Tiff went through a lot when she was younger. The story has only made us respect her more.

TIFFINY HALL, TELEVISION PERSONALITY, 29

Up until 14, I was paralysed with shyness. I couldn't ask questions in class, and at restaurants I'd get my younger sister, Bridget, to order food for me. I hated conflict. I stressed over everything. The night before sports and swimming carnivals, I'd feel sick. The stress to achieve - to not be the "dumb blonde" - started in year 6 and just got worse and worse.

I went to a very cliquey private girls' school. There was a big fight in year 6, and another in year 9, all the girls just at each other, and I didn't know what to do. At a girls' school you have to choose sides. But I was such a people-pleaser, I would never choose a side. So I wasn't very popular and they decided I was a "dumb blonde". I was very strong in English, but I struggled with maths and science. I worked hard to get good marks to subvert that dumb-blonde stereotype. I still carry it somewhat.

When I was 15, I was in 42nd Street. The lead guy came from another school and was 18 and drove a car. After the show finished, he gave out awards to everyone. He gave me an award for being "The girl most likely to become a porn star". I couldn't breathe. It was the most embarrassing moment of my life. He kept calling me to go up on stage and all the girls were laughing.

School stressed me out so much that I got glandular fever, which led to chronic fatigue syndrome, and I had to take six or seven months off. That was year 9, the pivotal time when you make your friends. Socially, I never recovered. I never fitted in. A lot of the girls were really well off and stuck together. The dominant thing was wealth and having the right things. One girl was bullied because her family rented their BMW.

My mum would pick me up in the Tarago - a "ninja" van that was sign-written with "Get Your Kicks Here" and "Fitness for Fun" - wearing her white taekwondo uniform. It was a family business and they'd take me and my sister to shopping centres to do demonstrations to build membership. Kids from school would come by. Being 14 and doing these demos in front of your friends was mortifying. There were so many aerobics girls and ballerinas, and I was into full-contact sports.

National Day Against Bullying, Bully For Them

March 21st is National Day Against Bullying, to celebrate Tiff has written a blog on her official website and included a picture of her when she was younger (above). How cute does she look? She has also revealed that she contributed to the book "Bully For Them", which means she can now add another work to her resume. Bully For Them provides hope and tactics to the one in four students in Australia affected by bullying.

In modern society, people - particularly celebrities are often the victim of online attacks and cyber stalking, which in itself is bullying. Before you send a hateful message, ask yourself - Why am I sending this? Is this any of my business? How would I feel? Is this the best thing that I can do with my time right now? What is going on in my life to make me want to do this? Bully's lack just as much confidence as victims, NEVER BULLY.

Black Warrior is out today - Saturday March 1st. While the book has been slowly filtering into retailers throughout the week, its official release date is today. So head on down to your local bookstore and grab a copy of the last novel in the Roxy Ran series! Alternatively, purchase it online via booktopia (who we highly recommend).

Here's a synopsis thanks to publisher Harper Collins:

"The town of Lanternwood is under attack. There's a Tigon, a monster that is half-dragon, half-tiger, on the loose. Roxy is being hunted by a fire-breathing army and her best friend Cinnamon has been kidnapped. It seems that everyone Roxy loves has been cursed and it's up to her to save them. Somebody wants revenge. And when life couldn't be more dangerous, Roxy loses her powers and all seems lost, particularly when she is plagued by ferocious nightmares that entwine her fate in a quest, not only to hunt down the Tigon, but also to find her estranged father.

Forced into a life on the run, Roxy is chased out of town by the Tigon's fire-breathing army. The search for her father means Roxy must try to stay alive as the friends Roxy once trusted betray her. And what awaits her is more horrifying than any of the terror she's suffered so far. Ages: 9+ 'Dazzlingly different... a novel about transformation that has the power to transform every reader. Tiffiny Hall is the new voice in children's fiction.' - John Marsden"
