Tiffiny visited Booktopia HQ yesterday to film a short video, sign copies of White Ninja and answer fan questions. Signed books are available for purchase here. We’ve also got a transcript of the chat session below.
Many people set themselves very ambitious goals. What are yours?
I want to write an international best-selling YA novel. I’m working on it. If that’s too hard – I’ll settle for being Jackie Chan in an action flick.
Who are some of your favourite strong female role models in YA fiction?
I don't think there's enough strong female heroines in children's fiction so that's why I created Roxy Ran! Girls love adventure too! It's so important for young girls to be confident and warriors in pursuit of their dreams.
What made you want to write a book for kids? Are there any authors that inspired you?
I am so excited to write for kids! I was inspired by John Marsden. He was one of my teachers at school and first sparked my love for writing and sharing stories.
Can you do all the ninja moves that Roxy can?
I can do all the ninja moves that Roxy Ran can ... except fly and flash invisible ;) And I still drink Hulk juice too!
What do you hope readers will take from your book? Do you want to create a new generation of kick ass girls?
The message of the book is all about confidence and using your voice. It's about emotional self-defence and using your emotional reflexes to block those things that hurt your feelings. Resilience is so important to learn in life.
Do you hope this book will inspire your readers to have greater self belief and learn to defend themselves?
Of course! The message of the book is confidence. I hope kids realise that confidence is the greatest superpower you could ever own.
Have you ever met any Heroshi's in your life which inspired you to create his character?
Everyone has known a bully in their life. I teach so many kids who have been bullied but also I work to reform the bullies through martial arts. Bullies lack as much confidence as the victims. Hero is evil but there's hope for him. I'm so thrilled you like the ending! Red Samurai is killer!
How did you come up with the idea of Roxy Ran and how long did it take you to actually think of the storyline?
I am always bursting with ideas and I see a bit of Roxy Ran or Cinnamon Evans or Jackson Axe in every kid I meet. X
How did you come up with the idea for Roxy?
Roxy Ran represents every little girl who has ever felt like she doesn't fit in. We've all had moments where we wished we could flash invisible or run away from a situation. Roxy is a combo of all the kids I’ve ever met and all their problems and heartache. The lessons she learns such as the importance of standing up for yourself and confidence were lessons I had to learn. They were tough but life changing.
I have been a Ninja for ten minutes now - Can you teach me to cope with the heavy burden, for with great power comes great responsibility?
Welcome ninja. You are now in training.... and it will take longer than ten minutes.
Are you really a Fifth Dan Black Belt?
Sure am! You can't give those out for free!
Thanks ninjas for all your fabulous questions! I've just had fun filming a great video for you with heaps of ninja moves and breaking cool stuff. I've also signed heaps of copies of White Ninja for Booktopians. STAY NINJA! Ay yahhhhh! Xxx Tiffiny
